Liberty County, TX — Ag Exemption Requirements (2026)

Liberty County sits in Southeast Texas along the Trinity River, between the Houston area and the Piney Woods. Its published guidelines cover cattle pasture, rice and row crops, hay, beekeeping, wildlife management, and timber; the clear native-versus-improved pasture rates and five-animal-unit floor are especially useful for small livestock operations.

Animal Unit Equivalencies

An animal unit (AU) is a standardized measure used to compare livestock of different sizes. One AU = one 1,000-lb cow. Your total stocking rate is calculated in AUs, then multiplied by the acres-per-AU standard for your pasture type. These values are published by the county.

The land must have qualified for agricultural appraisal in the year before conversion, be at least 15 contiguous acres under common ownership, and have a wildlife management plan. The owner must perform three of the seven listed wildlife-management activities.
