San Saba County, TX — Ag Exemption Requirements (2026)
San Saba County sits on the eastern Edwards Plateau along the Colorado River, northwest of Austin, where cattle and small-ruminant ranching, hay and grain production, orchards and pecans are important agricultural uses. San Saba CAD's guidelines are useful for landowners because they provide distinct native- and improved-pasture stocking rates, a four-animal-unit commercial-livestock threshold, and a detailed apiary schedule for smaller tracts.

Animal Unit Equivalencies
An animal unit (AU) is a standardized measure used to compare livestock of different sizes. One AU = one 1,000-lb cow. Your total stocking rate is calculated in AUs, then multiplied by the acres-per-AU standard for your pasture type. These values are published by the county.

"The chief appraiser considers each case on an individual basis."
"Lease agreements will be reviewed by the Chief Appraiser to determine if the leases are typical to San Saba County."
"The San Saba County Central Appraisal District has determined a commercial livestock operation must consist of four (4) animal units to be considered for special evaluation or the land must be actively producing in conjunction with a larger livestock operation that meets or exceeds the minimum number of animal units."
"Minimum acreage varies by agricultural activity; no universal minimum acreage is stated in the published document — confirm with CAD."
